Volunteer ESL Tutor at the Learning Centre

Hamilton Public Library

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer ESL tutor at the Learning Centre?

It's a great way to make new friends, learn about other cultures, and develop tutoring experience.English as a Second Language

Here is what you need to know:

A minimum six-month commitment is required. Tutors and students meet for 4 hours per week, in 2 two-hour sessions to work on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and writing. Tutors and students arrange to meet at mutually agreeable times.

Volunteer tutors need a good command of spoken and written English. Other qualifications include reliability, responsibility and personal attitude.

Once your application is received and approved, you will be invited to attend a two-hour orientation workshop. After you have attended the workshop, you will be matched with a student. Please be patient because the matching process takes time. Factors affecting matches include: schedule conflicts, meeting location, and personality considerations. It is necessary to ensure that the student and the volunteer are compatible in terms of skill, attitude and temperament.

If you have any questions about the process, please do not hesitate to contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 905-546-3200x3620or email volunteer@hpl.ca.
