Paws for Reading

Image of Casey the dog and a novel

The Paws for Reading Program is designed to help and encourage children to read. Animals are ideal reading companions especially for children who may not be strong readers. Throughout this eight-week session, trained BISHPets volunteers and their dogs will be in the Children's Department at the Central Library to read with children.

This program is designed for children in grades 1-4 who need help with their reading.

How do these special dogs help children?

  • They listen attentively
  • They do not judge, laugh or criticize
  • They allow children to read at their own pace
  • They are not intimidating
  • They help increase relaxation so that a child is open to learn and have fun!
