Local History:
1847 - Colin Campbell Ferrie
Ferrie arrived in Canada in 1824. In 1830 he arrived in Hamilton with his brother Adam to set up a branch of the family business. He rapidly became involved in the commercial life of Hamilton. He was one of the founders of the Gore Bank (1835), the London & Gore Railway (1834) and the Hamilton Board of Trade. Ferrie served on the first Board of Police for Hamilton in 1833-34 and represented Hamilton in the House of Assembly, being elected in 1836. Hamilton was incorporated as a city in 1846 and, after elections, Ferrie was chosen the first mayor of the City of Hamilton in 1847. He died of an 'enlargement of the heart' a few days after he collapsed at a meeting of the Gore Bank's board of directors in November of 1856.
