Aikman, Murray W.
Biography
Murray Aikman was born, raised and educated on Hamilton Mountain and is a proud descendent of United Empire Loyalists ancestors. Retired from the Hamilton Board of Education after 30 years of teaching, he and his wife Ellen share a love of history, travel, and grandchildren.
Having developed an early interest in the history of Hamilton schools, he published the history of Strathcona School and Hamilton’s West End Community (Strathcona Remembers). Murray also produced a handbook for conducting Elementary School Reunions and has chaired 5 successful school reunions. In the late 1980s he served as vice-chairman of the Hamilton Historical Board. Murray is a life member and past president of The Head-of-the-Lake Historical Society. As a member of the Society’s Publication Committee, he participated in the publication of: Around And About Hamilton and Hamilton: Panorama of Our Past.
Murray is a founding member and past president of The Hamilton Mountain Heritage Society and was a contributor to the book: Mountain Memories, produced by the Society in 2000
He is a founding member and past chair of the Board of Education’s Archives Committee. In 1987 he co-authored a history of the former Hamilton Board of Education: 150 Years of Excellence. He is also a long-time member and past chair of the MacNab Circle.
He is especially interested in the history of Olivet United Church and is presently serving as church archivist. Most recently, Murray has been a contributing author to Hamilton Street Names, Vanished Hamilton and First Here.
