Abramson, Beverley
Biography
Beverley Abramson is an award-winning Canadian photographer who is rapidly making her mark in the international arena. She developed a fine art photographic practice while participating in photographic studies through Toronto's Ryerson University and workshops abroad. As a social documentarian and versatile photo essayist, her humanistic stories - expressions of daily life within disparate cultures - employ a distinct style marked by empathy and wit. A socio-cultural portfolio on the Middle East during the height of the Intifada is a reflection of her determination to investigate the resilience and compassion of life within the complexities of Israel. Her images have been awarded recognition through juried competitions and exhibitions and published internationally along with personal stories that she has written. Her major work for the past several years chronicles the magnetism of dance encompassing diverse and unusual dance forms and cultures. An evolving project was launched after Abramson experienced the sounds of Cuba's legendary "Buena Vista Social Club." Captivated and inspired by their music and personal stories, she began her study of the universality of music and the relationship between sound, motion and emotion. This work drew her into the world of performing artists, dancers, musicians, and singers during performances and in the intimate and often chaotic surroundings backstage. Her portfolio on dance encompasses cabaret dance in Cuba, international ballroom and Latin dance competitions, exotic dance in Toronto, and two-stepping in Texas. Subsequent to her inaugural book, "Bawdy Language: Exotic Dance", other publications based on the theme of motion are: "Off We Go!" for children, to be released January 2006 by McClelland Stewart/Tundra Books; a PowerHouse Book of emerging photographers, December 2005; and "Gotta Dance: the Exotic Language of the Body", a work in progress.
