Pannell, Chris
Hamilton-area author Chris Pannell

Biography

Chris Pannell was born in England in 1956 and came to Canada in 1961. He obtained an M. A. in English from the University of Toronto in 1985. He presently works in Hamilton as a technical writer creating on-line help, user guides, and business procedure documents for the steel industry. He shares living quarters with his wife and a small flock of parrots and budgies. After several years of struggle, he feels he is close to the top of the pecking order. In 1996 he published 3 broadsheets of poems packaged together in an envelope entitled Fractures, Subluxations, Dislocations which received the Hamilton and Region Arts Council Book Award for Poetry. It is a graphically attractive and unusual format which suits the theme of the poems as stated in the title. Pannell believes strongly in the benefits of writing workshops and founded the New Writing Workshop at Hamilton Artists Inc. in 1993. He edited the two anthologies arising from this workshop: Your Baggage is in Buffalo (1994) and Between a Dock and a High Place (1997). The workshop has two broad aims: to help writers develop their craft and explore new ideas and forms especially fiction; and to support writers in sustaining their careers, especially in the areas of submitting to publishers, reading in public, and administering their own careers. Chris Pannell was Chair of the Literary Committee of the Hamilton and Region Arts Council in 1995.
