Role of Local History & Archives

The role of the Hamilton Public Library Local History & Archives Department is to house the collection and to process and access information in a wide variety of formats relating to the historical development of the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton-Wentworth region.

The resources of Local History & Archives are particularly directed to the information needs of researchers, genealogists, students (secondary and post-secondary), and interested individuals seeking materials relating to the history of Hamilton and the Hamilton-Wentworth region.

Local History & Archives Collections

The Department also houses a major Canadiana book collection, and a representative rare book collection, for use by library patrons as reference materials, that do not circulate. Canadian literary works relating to the War of 1812 and Arctic explorations are emphasized.

Hamilton's History through Online Collections

For a number of years, Local History & Archives, under contract to Industry Canada, created a number of digital sites highlighting aspects of Hamilton's history.
