Bookmobile Service

Bookmobile

Bookmobiles are libraries on wheels.

Bookmobiles are an extension of HPL’s collections and services on wheels.  For communities that do not have a library branch in their vicinity and for seniors who perhaps are unable to leave their home, the Bookmobile provides access to library collections and services year round.

The Bookmobile has been on the road since 1956.  Currently, HPL has two bookmobiles cruising the streets of Hamilton.  Each Bookmobile is 33 feet long and 12 feet high and houses 2000-2500 items.  In its early days, the Bookmobile made 5 stops in the city of Hamilton.  Today, the Bookmobile has 12 neighbourhood stops and 24 senior residences.  In 2010, the Bookmobile circulated 114,067 items and judging from most recent stats, this figure will be surpassed.

During the summer months, children and families can enjoy al fresco storytimes or join the Summer Reading Club.  This year, the Bookmobile celebrated several proud customers who were the winners of the Lego contest, the Nerf tournament and the Telling Tales Bookmark contest.

Our library on wheels is a very special and unique part of HPL’s public services, allowing us to go beyond the brick and mortar and connect with our many communities in the city of Hamilton.
